Choices Abortion Network Receives Grant from the Hellene Henrikson Legacy Fund held at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona

Choices Abortion Network (CAN) is honored to share that we have received a generous grant from the Hellene Henrikson Legacy Fund, held at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA). This grant is meant to support Native American patients seeking abortion services who are disproportionately affected by barriers to care. We are profoundly grateful for this support and for CFSA’s confidence in our mission.

A Heartfelt Thank You

This gift comes at a critical moment in Southern Arizona’s reproductive health landscape. As a small, community-rooted nonprofit, CAN exists to ensure that no patient is denied abortion care because of financial barriers. CFSA’s investment directly strengthens this work and will allow us to expand access for Native American patients, who disproportionately face geographic, financial, and systemic obstacles to receiving timely care.

We extend our sincere thanks to CFSA’s board, staff, and fund advisors for recognizing the importance of equitable access to reproductive healthcare, and for choosing to stand with patients who are often the least visible and the most impacted.

About CFSA: A Legacy of Community Partnership

Since 1980, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona has served as a trusted philanthropic partner, helping individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits work together to build a stronger, healthier region. CFSA supports communities throughout Southern Arizona (including Pima, Santa Cruz, and surrounding counties) by stewarding donor resources to measurably improve quality of life.

Their mission is rooted in values that resonate deeply with our own: equity, dignity, access, and community well-being. The Hellene Henrikson Legacy Fund, like so many CFSA funds, reflects a profound belief in strengthening local organizations that meet urgent community needs.

We are honored to be part of that shared vision.

How This Grant Supports CAN’s Mission

At CAN, we believe every person deserves access to compassionate, evidence-based abortion care; without fear, judgment, or financial hardship. This grant allows us to continue:

  • Providing up to 100% funding to Native American patients seeking abortion care who are in need
  • Prioritizing individuals from under-resourced and historically marginalized communities
  • Reducing barriers that disproportionately affect Native American patients, especially those living in remote regions
  • Ensuring that abortion access in Southern Arizona is patient-centered and dignified

A Critical Moment for Rural Patients

This funding also comes during a period when many rural Arizonans have been profoundly affected by the “Big, Beautiful Bill” funding cuts—policy changes that destabilized rural hospitals, reduced essential services, and widened existing health inequities.

These cuts hit Native American communities and rural counties hardest. Many patients now travel hours for basic reproductive health services, including abortion care. This grant enables CAN to respond to those gaps by offering immediate, compassionate support for patients who might otherwise fall through the cracks.

Moving Forward, Together

CFSA’s support strengthens a shared vision: a Southern Arizona where every person, regardless of income, insurance, tribal affiliation, or zip code, can access the reproductive healthcare they need with dignity and autonomy.

We are deeply grateful for this partnership with the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona and the Hellene Henrikson Legacy Fund. Together, we CAN continue building a future where reproductive freedom is meaningful, equitable, and accessible to all.
