First visit — Arizona requires a pregnancy confirmation and consultation visit at least 24 hours prior to an abortion.

On your 2nd visit, we may draw blood (finger stick) to determine if you are anemic.

Services are provided only under the supervision of licensed medical professionals in accordance with state and federal regulations. No medications are sold or shipped from this website.

Process Description

We use a medication that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration with a second medication to end pregnancies under 11.0 weeks from the last menstrual period.

1.  The first medication is a hormone modulator, which means it prevents progesterone from fully supporting the pregnancy and stops development. You will take it while you are in the office.

2.  Twenty-four to 48 hours after taking the first medication, you will take the second medication, which comes in the form of 4 tablets. You will place 2 tablets each on each side of your mouth between your cheeks and gums and let them dissolve for 30 minutes. Anything left after 30 minutes can be swallowed normally.

In general, patients will begin to bleed and cramp within 4 to 6 hours after ingestion of the tablets. Patients can sometimes also have blood clots.

Heavy bleeding usually lasts 24 hours and then subsides. We ask that you return to the office in 2 weeks to ensure you have passed the pregnancy safely. Our patients usually report minimal bleeding during this visit.

Side Effects

Arizona law requires that the 1st pill be taken in the office. Most patients do not report significant side effects and can return to work, school, or their usual activities without interruption. Twenty-four to 48 hours after taking the initial dose, you will take the 4 tablets as directed.

The bleeding and cramping that happens afterward can be heavy enough to disrupt your regular activities. You may need to plan around this. You should also consider that you may have associated nausea, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea.

Risks

The biggest risk is that bleeding could be heavy enough for you to seek emergency care (.3%). There is an even smaller risk of infection (< .3%). The overall risk for the entire process is approximately 14 times less than the risk associated with a vaginal delivery.

Aftercare

Ideally, we like our patients to get some rest during and immediately after taking the medication. This tends to decrease the amount of cramping and bleeding during the recovery period. We will prescribe a mild pain reliever and something for nausea. We offer our patients a 2-week follow-up appointment free of charge.
